His letters written during the war, 1863-1865, concern the details of military encounters, the work of the black troops, pay difficulties, camp conditions, reading Fannie Kemble's book, the reaction of Rebel troops and white southerners to Union black troops, his comments on military leaders and plans, comparison between contraband black regiments and Union black troops, his opinions of Copperheads, and how Southern experiences influenced Union troops in the direction of abolition. There are also several letters he wrote while attending Harvard and one he received from his sister Jenny. Other items include military muster rolls, appointments, orders, and leaves, 1863-1865, and his letter of resignation, 1865. There are typescript copies of the letters prepared by Kevin J. Gallagher in 1979.

Frances Anne "Fanny" Kemble (27 November 1809 – 15 January 1893) was a British actress from a theatre family in the early and mid-19th century.
